Newswise — The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) continued its global mission by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Associacao Brasileira de Metalurgia, Materiais e Mineracao (ABM) during a special meeting at the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Francisco.
The collaboration is part of the TMS Alliance of the Americas initiative to work together with Society partners in Canada and South America. The Memorandum of Understanding was established to develop cooperative activities with ABM.
"As TMS strives to strategically build collaborations within the 'Americas' this agreement provides an opportunity for joint programming across the spectrum of extractive and physical metallurgy, materials science, and new frontiers in materials contributing to energy and energy security topics," said TMS Vice President George T. "Rusty" Gray III. "ABM's leveraging of diverse natural resources within its respective country, industrial strengths, and fundamental research across numerous manufacturing and science and engineering sectors offers a very wide landscape of programming areas germane to TMS' strengths."
TMS will co-sponsor the 65th ABM Congress in July 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will feature collaborative technical programming activities— as part of the cooperative agreement.
ABM focuses on the exchange of technical and scientific knowledge and continuously searches for advancement opportunities for professionals dedicated to developing the areas of metallurgy and materials. The association's 3,500 members come from industry, academia, and research adding more than 130 enterprises from the sectors associated mineral and metal-mechanical and materials.
Horacido Leal Barbosa Filho, ABM executive director, and Renaldo Nascimento, events manager; as well as Marc Meyers and Sergios Neves Monteiro, who were instrumental in connecting the two societies represented ABM during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.
