Newswise — The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has continued its global mission by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (MetSoc) during a special meeting at the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in San Francisco.
The collaboration is part of the TMS Alliance of the Americas initiative to work together with Society partners in Canada and South America.
MetSoc is one of four societies and five divisions that comprise the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum. It is composed of nine technical sections, representing the technical diversity of the metals, minerals, and materials community, and of nine standing committees dedicated to the various member services of the Society.
"As TMS strives to strategically build collaborations within the 'Americas' this agreement can provide an opportunity for joint programming across the spectrum of extractive and physical metallurgy, materials science, and new frontiers in materials contributing to energy and energy security topics," said TMS Vice President George T. "Rusty" Gray III. "MetSoc's leveraging of diverse natural resources within its respective country, industrial strengths, and its fundamental research across numerous manufacturing and science and engineering sectors offers a very wide landscape of programming areas germane to TMS' strengths."
The Memorandum of Understanding enables TMS and MetSoc to develop areas of cooperation. Both of the Societies have a history of collaboration on specialty meetings in the extractive processing area and through a joint student program. It also provides a framework for building on past activities and extending them into the future.
