Training for Hazmat Teams

In the unlikely event of a chemical attack on the United States, firefighters and other emergency personnel are trained to respond to the event and take necessary precautions to protect the public and themselves, says Barbara Hilyer, MSPH, director of UAB Center for Labor Education and Research (CLEAR) Workplace Safety Training Program. Hilyer and her staff train firefighters, emergency personnel, and other first responders in hazardous material emergency response. "Emergency workers would respond to a chemical attack just like they respond to any other hazardous materials incident. As quickly as possible, they assess the hazard, identify the chemical agent, put on protective gear, set up a perimeter around the spill and protect all persons in the area. "
