In the past, the average school counselor spent most of his or her day consulting with an average of 10 to 15 students. And most of these students were either discipline problems or college bound high achievers. But today, school counselors provide more services to more students. This trend is supported by the American School Counselor Association, which published national standards in 1997.

"Counselors must provide more services to the kids who aren't in trouble or at the top of their class," says UAB school counseling expert Larry Tyson, Ph.D. One way to do that, says Tyson, is for counselors to work in partnership with teachers to develop effective interventions for students struggling with personal problems that can disrupt learning.
