Newswise — Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, in partnership with The Centre for Evidence in Transplantation (CET), is pleased to announce the launch of The Transplantation Library, an online database of research evidence in organ transplantation.

The Transplantation Library, accessible at http://www.transplantjournal.com/library,provides users with a comprehensive database of all randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in solid organ transplantation, over 5000 trials from 1970 to the present. The database incorporates clinical trial references from MEDLINE/Pub Med, the Cochrane Library (with permission), conference proceedings and other electronic sources. All published trials undergo a comprehensive review to assess study quality, including quality scores for studies published in 2004 and after.

Full access to The Transplantation Library is now available to subscribers to Transplantation, the Official Journal of the Transplantation Society. Libraries and other institutional subscribers can gain access via Ovid Technologies.

A key feature of The Transplantation Library is a simple and intuitive search interface, allowing rapid and comprehensive searches on focused topics. This permits users to perform searches on specific topics in transplantation in a matter of minutes rather than hours, even without specialized search skills. Searches can also be performed using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary.

The Transplantation Library is updated regularly by the CET's professional research staff, ensuring that the information indexed is always reliable and complete—even including trials that have been published electronically ahead of print. The new online resource replaces the twice-yearly RCT registry publications, which have been a regular feature in the pages of Transplantation since 2004.

Sir Peter J. Morris, Director of the CET and Past President of The Transplantation Society, comments: "In developing The Transplantation Library, our objective was to put the highest-quality research evidence, namely reports of randomized controlled trials, into the hands of transplantation professionals in the most efficient and practical manner."

Professor Morris adds, "The library is easy to search, not requiring specialist search skills, and thus will help to provide transplant clinicians and allied health personnel with a ready source of best quality information to help them in their care of patients with organ transplants. In this age of information overload, I suspect that this will be the forerunner of similar libraries in other specialties."

"Together with our partners at CET, it's a privilege to play a role in the creation of this groundbreaking resource for the Transplantation community, " comments James P. Mulligan, Publisher of Transplantation for LWW. "It is consistent with LWW's position as a leading provider of information in the field of Transplantation, as well as our ongoing focus on developing new platforms for clinicians to access the high-quality research information they need."

About the Centre for Evidence in Transplantation (http://www.transplantevidence.com)The aim of the CET, established under the Directorship of Professor Sir Peter Morris in 2005 (Emeritus Professor of Oxford University, Honorary Professor University of London and Past President of The Transplantation Society), is to provide high quality, evidence-based information on all aspects of solid organ transplantation. The electronic library of RCTs in organ transplantation is one of its projects.
