Bailes, Jr., MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the NorthShore University HealthSystem Neurological Institute in suburban Chicago, and also a former NFL and NCAA team physician. Along with other highly accomplished TBI specialists, Dr. Bailes will discuss the alarming escalation of TBI, especially among athletes and the military. In recent years, news coverage shows that even celebrities, including George Clooney, Gary Busey, Brett Michaels and Natasha Richardson, have suffered from TBI.
“In the past decade, researchers have learned more about concussions and other head injuries than ever before,” said Dr. Bailes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 1.7 million TBIs occur annually, and TBI is a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States.
The TBI session will present current controversies relating to the surgical and non-surgical treatment of TBI in adults, including dialogue about concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition suffered by numerous former professional athletes who have endured repeated head injuries. New monitoring techniques and promising new therapies for TBI will also be discussed.
