Newswise — Thomas E. Jackiewicz, chief executive officer of UC San Diego Health System, has been elected to serve as Chair of the Founder’s Board for the Dr Foster 2011 Global Comparators Project. The project’s aim is to understand trends in global health and to drive lifesaving improvements in patient care. The Board is comprised of CEOs and leadership from 31 top-ranked hospitals in five countries.

“I am honored to serve as Chair for the Dr Foster Global Comparators Board,” said Jackiewicz. “This is a unique opportunity to connect world-class hospitals to share and compare international data, groundbreaking academics and confirmed best practices.”

Dr Foster is one of Europe’s largest medical informatics organizations. Its Founder’s Board was established to provide strategic direction to the long-term development of the Global Comparators Project. Participating countries include the United States, the UK, Italy and the Netherlands.

“By collaborating and intelligently comparing hospital data we will be able to develop an international system for monitoring clinical performance. We are looking for trends that rise above our local hospitals to form insights that will positively impact delivery of care,” said Jackiewicz. “Our goal is to see decreased mortality, shorter hospital stays and fewer readmissions. Our interactions will serve to inform our hospitals strategies and to inspire future research.”

Activities for the board include delivery of a methodology for directly comparing specific outcomes for small groups of patients with common characteristics in hospitals across national borders, creation of a common risk model based on effectively mapping benchmark data, and the deployment of analytical tools that allow hospitals to understand the details behind variations in performance.

Jackiewicz was appointed CEO of UC San Diego Health System in November 2009. He previously served as associate vice chancellor and chief financial officer for Health Sciences at UC San Diego, chief operating officer of Columbia University Medical Center, senior associate chair for finance and administration at the Stanford University School of Medicine, director of finance and administration for Oregon Health Sciences University and director of business and financial operations at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Jackiewicz has also served as the National Chair of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Business Affairs, and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the University HealthSystem Consortium.
