Understanding Philippine Muslims

The Islamic rebel group Abu Sayyaf, which is fighting for an independent homeland in the Philippines, has brought a wave of terror to that country.

Islamic rebels are the subject of the 1998 book "Muslim Rulers and Rebels: Everyday Politics and Armed Separatism in the Southern Philippines" by UAB anthropologist Thomas McKenna, Ph.D. The book examines the meaning and motivations for the separatist movements through the viewpoint of ordinary adherents.

"Abu Sayyaf has stepped up their activities now because the government has chosen to negotiate with another group, the Moro National Liberation Front, and has been cracking down on the other rebel groups. The members of Abu Sayyaf are dissatisfied with the deal struck with the MNLF."
