Understanding Stepfamilies

In the new millenium, stepfamilies are projected to be the most prevalent family type rather than the traditional, biological family, says UAB counseling expert Bill Crunk, Ph.D. Some common issues stepfamilies face include consensus regarding discipline, acceptance by social institutions or culture, role clarification and marriage satisfaction.

Stepfamilies also face issues over divided loyalties where adults may feel closer to their biological children. The problem, says Crunk, is that most family counselors are trained based on the traditional family model. To be effective, "counselors must be more aware of the unique issues and needs blended families bring into counseling." Counseling programs must also teach students to recognize the differences between typical transitional issues of stepfamilies and dysfunction or pathology.
