Newswise — Angela Wandinger-Ness, PhD, has a global view on scientific collaboration. As a first generation bilingual American, she has experienced how diversity in culture, opinion and backgrounds can spark scientific discovery. Dr. Wandinger-Ness completed her postdoctoral work in Germany and is an internationally-recognized expert in GTPases, the molecular switches that control cell behavior. She is now a University of New Mexico Professor of Pathology at the UNM School of Medicine and the Associate Director for Education, Training and Mentoring at the UNM Cancer Center. The German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, recently named her a Research Ambassador to Germany.
“The German Academic Exchange Service has a very comprehensive program of research exchange with multiple universities and institutions,” says Dr. Wandinger-Ness. “I’m on the ground locally so I can help students and faculty navigate to the right opportunities for their level and their interests.” Of the 93 Research Ambassadors throughout the United States and Canada, Dr. Wandinger-Ness is the only one in New Mexico, the only one within a 450-mile radius, and is one of a few actively engaged in research in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field. But as a Research Ambassador, Dr. Wandinger-Ness can help students and faculty in any field. Dr. Wandinger-Ness was invited to apply for the Research Ambassador opportunity because of her previous, 5-year postdoctoral experience at the European Molecular Biology Lab in Heidelberg, Germany. She later returned to Germany as a Visiting Professor at the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund, Germany. With her experience and contacts, Dr. Wandinger-Ness is well-positioned to help others find the right opportunities. And, having thoroughly enjoyed her time in Germany, she is looking forward to helping others achieve a rich international experience, too.
