WHEN: Tuesday, June 5, 2007 Androgens and Women: The Latest Research, 10:00 " 11:00 a.m. EDT"¢ Diabetes drugs often prescribed to women with the common hormone disorder polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may not reduce excessive hair growth on their face and body. Insulin Sensitizers in Hirsutism: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials presented by Dr. Brian Swiglo."¢ Excessive facial and body hair in women is reduced by androgen-lowering drugs. However, the medications, often called anti-androgens, do not appear to be effective in every woman. Antiandrogens in Hirsutism: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis presented by Dr. Brian Swiglo."¢ Low testosterone linked to anxiety and depression in anorexia nervosa in women. In a study of women with anorexia nervosa, the lower their testosterone levels, the more likely the women were to have severe anxiety and depression. This was true even in women also being treated with anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. They were also more likely to have more severe thoughts and behaviors associated with eating disorders. Androgen Deficiency: Association with Increased Anxiety and Depression Symptom Severity in Anorexia Nervosa presented by Dr. Karen Miller."¢ Low testosterone associated with low bone density in anorexia nervosa. Women with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa generally have lower than normal testosterone levels. Women with the lowest levels generally had the thinnest bones and the least muscle mass.
