U.S. - China Standoff a Good Thing?

Some people saw the recent U.S. - China spy plane crisis as a good thing, says UAB Asian studies expert John Van Sant, Ph.D., "A number of hard line Marxists in China, who opposed the market opening to [U.S. trade], are probably pleased about the country's damaged U.S. relations. A significant number of People's Party Congress leaders, including many in the military, have opposed China's markets opening up to the international community ever since the Chinese government adopted the Four Modernizations policy in the late 1970s.

Although the ideological hard-liners are dwindling, they're still a potent force in Chinese politics." Some U.S. congressmen also oppose closer U.S.-China relations because of concerns about China's human rights record, or its Communist ideology.
