Video Contest Winners Show Global Impact of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society

February 15, 2010 ¬– Warrendale, PA (USA) – A ski industry materials analyst, a rocket scientist and a college professor captured the top three awards for their telling personal career stories via video for The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) competition, “TMS, MSE & Me.”

The global reach and diversity of TMS and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was affirmed by the winning materials scientists who hailed from three continents. The prizes were revealed February 14 at the society’s annual meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Travis Halverson, of Colorado, a 2009 graduate of the University of Minnesota, captured first prize and $2,010 for his production that centered on his passion for skiing, TMS and researching new ski materials to improve the sport.

Amber Genau, a U.S. rocket scientist working in Germany, won the second place prize and $750 for her video crediting her affiliation with TMS for helping her to develop her career while in a post doctoral position abroad.

Fu Guo, a materials science professor at Beijing University of Technology, in China, earned third place and $250 for his heartfelt tribute to TMS and his evolution from student member to a professor now leading the next generation through his society membership.

“I marveled at the creativity, polish, and sheer cleverness of so many of the entries. I have no doubt that it will be gratifying for all TMS members to see how much professional and personal value the participants attach to the community that is TMS,” said James R. Robinson, deputy executive director of TMS.

Nine videos were considered for the top prizes and are posted on Channel TMS, the society’s YouTube Channel. Winners were determined based on the number of views tallied through February 1, along with contest criteria considered by a panel of judges comprised of staff and members.
