Newswise — The American Physical Society, jointly with the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University, will hold a Golden Anniversary Celebration for the APS's flagship journal, Physical Review Letters. The Celebration includes a symposium, reception, and banquet to be held on Friday, June 27, at the Charles B. Wang Center on the Stony Brook University campus. A broad range of guests has been invited, including scientists and leadership at SBU and Brookhaven National Laboratory, local and state politicians, journalists, Stony Brook University physics faculty and students, and APS employees.

In the fifty years of its existence, PRL has been recognized as one of the world's leading and most selective scientific journals. Appearing weekly, it features brief "letters" style articles on topics in every field of physics, with nearly two thirds of articles submitted by authors outside of the United States. All published Letters have been carefully "peer-reviewed" by expert referees; only about a third of submitted manuscripts make the cut. Nearly all of the world's research libraries hold subscriptions to PRL in its electronic format.

The June 27 event begins with an afternoon symposium featuring three speakers: Martin Blume, Brookhaven National Laboratory and APS Editor in Chief Emeritus; Barbara V. Jacak, Stony Brook University, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy; and Lawrence M. Krauss, Professor and Director of the Center for Education & Research in Cosmology & Astrophysics, Case Western Reserve University. Invitations are still available at the option of the organizers, reachable at [email protected].

The Golden Anniversary Celebration is part of a year long series of events including special editorials, articles, and features, a timeline showing the evolution of PRL and the APS journals operation, and other meetings and celebration events in the US and abroad. http://prl.aps.org/50years
