Newswise — Peter J. Mandell, M.D. was named, Chair of the Council on Advocacy at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Dr. Mandell has served as past president of the California Orthopaedic Association and currently chairs its Workers' Compensation Committee.
"I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that his new position as Advocacy Council Chair will bring," said Dr. Mandell. "I am thankful to my predecessor, Dr. David A. Halsey, for all his hard work over the last six years in elevating the Council on Advocacy to its present prominence within the orthopaedic community," stated Dr. Mandell.
"Under Dr. Halsey's leadership, the Association has reached a new level of orthopaedic advocacy. I look forward to continuing his vision of ensuring that AAOS priorities are heard and addressed in the 111th Congress and in state capitols around the country, particularly on the issues of Medicare, Medicaid and comprehensive health care reform. It is also important to educate the Association fellowship on each of our advocacy related successes throughout the year," said Dr. Mandell.
Dr. Mandell was born and raised on the San Francisco peninsula. He has practiced orthopaedic surgery there for over 33 years. He is currently assistant clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at University of California, San Francisco. He graduated from Yale University, and attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed a first year general surgery residency at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, California and the remainder of his orthopaedic surgery residency at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Training Program. He has continuing interests in orthopaedic advocacy, professionalism, and occupational orthopaedics.
An active member of the Academy, Dr. Mandell was also a founding member and inaugural chair of the AAOS Committee on Professionalism. He served as Chair of the Board of Councilors, and was a member of the AAOS Political Action Committee and the Council on Health Policy and Practice.
Dr. Mandell has moderated AAOS Annual Meeting Instructional Course Lectures on occupational orthopaedics and professionalism, and has contributed to AAOS publications such as OKU 9. Dr. Mandell also helped organize the AAOS webinar "Telling the Whole Truth: Orthopaedists as Expert Witnesses."
