Newswise — The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) is pleased to announce two teaching recognition awards for 2009: (1) the award for achievement in education is designed to recognize outstanding career contributions by senior anesthesiology faculty, and (2) the award for innovation in education is designed to recognize extraordinary educational programs devised by junior or middle level anesthesiology faculty. Each winner will receive a $15,000 award: $5,000 for the recipient, and $10,000 for the recipient's institution for education in the field of anesthesia. In addition to the cash award, each winner will receive round-trip airfare and accommodations at the IARS 2010 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, in March 2010.

"In a climate of contracting academic budgets, the IARS is pleased that we can continue to reward excellence in teaching within the anesthesia specialty," stated Tom Cooper, Executive Director of the IARS. "Since 1983, the IARS has awarded over $8 million in grants and has funded over 125 projects in the anesthesia field. With diminishing financial support from other sources, the IARS' continued support of education and research is crucial to the specialty."

The application deadline is May 15, 2009, and only one applicant per academic department is allowed. For further information about the IARS teaching recognition and research awards, including rules, guidelines and application forms, please visit www.iars.org/awards or call 415-730-7052.
