Neptune, NJ – December 4 – Bayshore Community Hospital, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center, and Riverview Medical Center – all part of Meridian CardioVascular Network – have received awards from the American Heart Association, a testament to the health care system’s commitment to providing the best care available for heart failure patients.

Jersey Shore has been recognized as a Gold Plus level recipient, while Ocean earned a Silver award, and Bayshore received the Bronze award from the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure program for implementing the latest research-based treatment guidelines for heart failure patients through quality improvement.

“Meridian Health is dedicated to providing the best possible care for heart failure and STEMI patients,” says Vincent Vivona, D.O., FACP, Chair, Heart Failure Process Improvement for Meridian Cardiovascular Network. “The AHA’s recognitions affirm that Monmouth and Ocean county residents have close-to-home access to advanced cardiac care and medical teams committed to improving long-term outcomes,” adds Dr. Vivona.

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure.

Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations. Under Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. They also receive alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged.

Riverview Medical Center has received the AHA’s Mission: Lifeline® Silver Award, and Jersey Shore the Bronze Award, for their commitment to improving the survival and care of people who suffer a STEMI, or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment.

The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® quality improvement program helps hospitals and emergency medical services develop systems of care that follow proven standards and procedures for STEMI patients.

The Meridian Cardiovascular Network is committed to providing quality heart care, close to home, by offering everything to diagnose, treat, and mend virtually all heart and vascular conditions. The Network provides patients with the unique integration of services to have the best outcomes and a better patient experience.
