Newswise — (New Orleans, LA) – Enrica Arnaudo, MD, PhD, will be presented the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine’s (AANEM) 2016 Advocacy Award, at the AANEM 2016 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, September 14-17, 2016.

The AANEM Advocacy Award recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to increase public awareness or advocate to government entities or insurance companies regarding the role of EDX medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders.

"I have a passion for health policy," said Dr. Arnaudo. A firm believer in grassroots advocacy, she said, "We need to join together, to build relationships inside and out of the medical profession."

Dr. Arnaudo completed her Medical School and Neurology Residency at the University of Turin, Italy, and received her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Turin.

While doing NM research as a resident, she won a fellowship award from the Italian MDA, and chose to go to Columbia University in New York. She then completed a neurology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, followed by a NM Diseases and EMG fellowship at Columbia. She joined the faculty of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and was the director of the EMG Lab and NM Division in the Deptment of Neurology before leaving for private practice.

"I'm a big advocate for private practice," said Dr. Arnaudo.

"I manage a busy solo practice, and I still make time for advocacy because it's important to my profession. As our health care environment is changing, physicians need to be part of conversation."

Dr. Arnaudo has served on the AANEM state liaison committee since 2009, is the current representative for Delaware, and recently became AANEM alternate delegate to the AMA House of Delegates. Her one-on-one contacts with congressmen have helped advance efforts to promote quality patient care in EDX medicine, combat federal spending on fraudulent and wasteful tests, and engage CMS in a dialogue to protect the future of NM medicine.

"What I consider myself now is a frontline doctor. I believe standards of care should be driven by doctors," said Dr. Arnaudo. "I want to ensure that patients continue to have access to high quality EDX care across the country. We need to engage with the people making decisions for us. I believe we can improve the landscape for physicians if we do it collectively, with a unified voice."
