Wanted: Special Education Teachers

The National Clearinghouse for Professions in Special Education recently reported a substantial shortage of qualified personnel to serve the disabled across all age groups. The shortage is especially critical for children with severe or multiple disabilities.

"Early intervention and early childhood personnel preparation programs often focus on mild- to-moderate disabilities," says UAB special education expert Jennifer Kilgo, Ed.D., "because these children represent the largest numbers served in special education."

The UAB School of Education has received a four-year, $800,000 U.S. Department of Education grant to fund Project TransTeam to develop a master's level early childhood special education program that will recruit minorities and the disabled, often underrepresented in special education and relate professions, to work with severely disabled children.
