According to "A Study of Women Leaders" by UAB management professor Susan Key, Ph.D., women need stable lives with access to education and support systems in order to be successful. Most of the respondents were raised in stable families, are married with children, have undergraduate degrees or higher, and have had mentors and supportive spouses.

"Perhaps the two most important findings in this study are the role education plays in equipping women for success and providing an arena for success, and the great need the women surveyed felt for greater representation in the legislative process. The other important finding is the important role a stable family life is, both as children and as adults, to achieving success."
