Newswise — Each fall, parents wonder about which vaccinations their students need for school and whether their college students should be vaccinated for bacterial meningitis. August is National Immunization Month.

Studies have found college freshmen who live in dormitories are at a slightly higher risk for bacterial meningitis.

Patricia Schafer, associate professor in the Kirkhof College of Nursing and associate dean of Community and Clinical Services at Grand Valley State University, can comment on required vaccinations and their importance. She can also comment on whether students should be vaccinated for bacterial meningitis.
