Despite having their own credit histories, equal education and work experience, women entrepreneurs continue to use their own funds to finance business expansion. Lending institutions still do not lend to them as willingly as they do to men, says UAB management professor Susan Key, Ph.D.

In the past, it was difficult for women to get loans because they had less credit history, less education and less work history. Today, wage differentials based on gender discrimination negatively affect financial portfolios and lower available credit.

"The only explanation for this is socio-cultural gender bias that persists despite the laws to remedy it. It is difficult to change attitudes. Most bias is institutionalized. It is often subconscious and perhaps arguably unintentional but, it has become a vicious cycle."
