June 3, UAB journeys to Europe via the WOW.UAB.EDU Web site with UAB Spanish scholar Mario Chandler, Ph.D., for two weeks of research into the African experience in Spain.
HTTP://WOW.UAB.EDU is an interactive, regularly updated Web site that shares with the public the discoveries of UAB researchers and students as they work around the world.
Chandler will share photographs and journal entries as he travels to Madrid, Salamanca, Granada and Valladolid in search of manuscripts that highlight the black African presence in pre-modern Spanish literature and society. He also will interview black Africans for insights into what it's like to be a black person living in Spain, including the problem of racial discrimination and the recent wave of anti-immigration sentiments.
