Newswise — Renowned scientist Dr. Richard Myers will be the keynote speaker at the sixth annual Southeast Regional Collaborative Access Team (SER-CAT) symposium next month in Huntsville.

The symposium is expected to attract more than 100 scientists from around the southeastern United States interested in X-ray crystallography and improved methods for structure determination, according to Dr. Joseph Ng, a UAHuntsville research scientist and faculty member.

The event is scheduled for March 20 at the Shelby Center for Science and Technology on the campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The deadline to register is March 6.

Myers, former chair of genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine, is now president of the Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville. He left California after Hudson-Alpha founder Jim Hudson convinced him of the collaborative efforts within the institute and the numerous companies located within the institute would apply whole-genome approaches to understanding and treating human diseases. Former NASA astronaut Dr. Owen Garriott will speak at a dinner that evening. Garriott spent 60 days aboard Skylab in 1973 and is a former Stanford University professor. Today, he is an adjunct professor in the Laboratory for Structural Biology at UAHuntsville and an active participant in the university's biotechnology PhD. program. The program begins that morning at 8:30 a.m. followed by three sessions, including awards for SER-CAT Young Investigator and SER-CAT Oustanding Science Award. A poster session and dinner will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
