Newswise — August 21, 2013 - Warrendale, PA (USA) - The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and ASM International announce two new editors for the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions journals: Steven J. Zinkle of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Sridhar Seetharaman of the University of Warwick.

Zinkle Named Editor for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions E

Steven J. Zinkle, chief scientist of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate and a Corporate Fellow at ORNL, has been named the second of two editors of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions E: Materials for Energy Systems. This new, peer-reviewed journal, scheduled to debut in March 2014, will focus on the science and technology of energy materials and joins the long-established, highly respected, and peer-reviewed Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and B family of publications.

Zinkle joins Principal Editor David Laughlin, Alcoa Professor of Physical Metallurgy at Carnegie Mellon University, and Victorino Franco, Professor in the Condensed Matter Physics Department at Sevilla University in Spain, who was named an editor for the journal in May 2013.

Laughlin noted that Zinkle brings with him more than 20 years of research on nuclear materials. "This and his background in mechanical properties of materials make him an ideal editor for the new journal. Along with co-editor Dr. Victorino Franco, Dr. Zinkle will help Metallurgical and Materials Transactions E become the 'go to' journal for understanding the role of materials for energy conversion, transmission, and storage."

Before taking on his current role at ORNL, Zinkle served as the director of the lab's Materials Science and Technology Division from 2006 to 2010 and in a variety of research scientist and program management roles since he joined ORNL in 1985. He received a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering and an M.S. in Materials Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research has centered on microstructure-property relationships in materials for a broad range of energy applications, including deformation and fracture mechanisms in structural materials and investigation of radiation effects in ceramics, fuel systems, and metallic alloys for fusion and fission energy systems.

"I am pleased to be joining Victorino Franco as editor of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions E," said Zinkle. "My research to date has been devoted to materials science investigations that will enable advanced energy applications, which is the essence of this new journal. Addressing the world's growing energy demand in an economical and environmentally sustainable manner is a daunting challenge. Success will be largely dependent on the discovery, development, and deployment of advanced materials, and this new journal will provide an excellent forum for disseminating this important information."

Zinkle has been a member of the TMS/ASM Nuclear Materials committee for more than 25 years and served as chair from 2003 to 2005. He was also a member of the 2010 TMS Energy Materials Blue Ribbon panel, and participated in follow-on technical working group activities that led to the January 2011 TMS report Linking Transformational Materials and Processing for an Energy Efficient and Low-Carbon Economy.

Zinkle was named a Fellow of ASM International in 2003. A member of the Oak Ridge Chapter of ASM, he served on the ASM Nominating Committee in 2007 and has been active on the Awards Policy Committee. "This new journal is the natural next step in a series of energy-related materials initiatives spearheaded by TMS and ASM International," he said. "I am excited to be involved in this endeavor."

Seetharaman Named Editor for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions Journals

Sridhar Seetharaman, TATA Steel and Royal Academy of Engineering Joint Chair for Research into Low Carbon Materials Technology in the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick, has been named an editor for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, B, and E, which focus on physical metallurgy and materials science, process metallurgy and materials processing science, and materials for energy systems, respectively.

"Dr. Seetharaman's broad background in research makes him an ideal person to be involved with all three of the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions journals," said Laughlin, who is principal editor for the three journals. "He is the first person to be appointed to such a position."

At the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, Seetharaman leads work on physico-chemical aspects of iron and steel manufacturing and usage with an emphasis on energy efficiency, low carbon, and reduction of emissions. This includes research into the sustainable manufacturing of steels in current plants as well as the development of next-generation plants.

"When I was an undergraduate student, I learned how the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions journals were the gold standard for publishing one's research in process metallurgy," said Seetharaman. "Our community has since shrunk, but for those of us in it, Metallurgical and Materials Transactions has preserved its quality and uniqueness. As an editor, I will help to maintain this, to ensure that a forum for scientific work continues to exist for process metallurgy."

Seetharaman was previously the POSCO Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Co-Director of the Center for Iron and Steel Research, at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He gained his undergraduate degree from the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also spent a year as a research associate at Imperial College in London.
