It's gone from a body builder's steroid alternative to a date rape drug and now to a personal intoxicant, says Steve Moore, a UAB substance abuse counselor. A colorless, tasteless liquid often cooked up in a home kitchen, GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate) has become increasingly popular in late night clubs, especially with young people seeking its intoxicating effects.

"A little GHB produces intoxication similar to alcohol use. Too much GHB, particularly combined with alcohol, produces respiratory depression, coma and sometimes death. Unfortunately, it's impossible for users to determine when a little becomes too much."
