Newswise — Washington, DC (Jan. 12, 2016) — In today’s value-based health care delivery system, radiology professionals must learn to merge evidence-based medical practice with ideal patient experience. Influential patient advocate Andy DeLaO will offer ways to add value to a patient’s medical experience in his May 17 Moreton Lecture at ACR 2016 — The Crossroads of Radiology®. DeLaO, better known as @CancerGeek in social media circles, has an extensive background in health care, cancer services, business development, marketing and health care experience design.

“During the Moreton Lecture, ACR 2016 attendees will gain practical tips to help them define the ideal patient experience, deliver value to the doctor-patient relationship and generate more time to spend with patients,” said Timothy L. Swan, MD, FACR, vice speaker of the American College of Radiology Council. “This lecture is another necessary resource to help shape the national health care shift and promote the vital role that radiology serves in valued-based, collaborative systems,” he added.

Currently, DeLaO is the marketing manager in global molecular imaging and computed tomography services for a major health care firm. He spent three years leading a national oncology team focused on having conversations with customers and collaborating to improve patient care and access. He has worked with patient communities to develop and build two new hospitals and six new cancer centers and to renovate and expand oncology service lines and facilities. DeLaO has led national grants and research focusing on multidisciplinary care and patient navigation for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program. He has developed new models of reimbursement based on delivering care to patients on their terms.

The Moreton Lecture was established in 1993 in recognition of the outstanding contributions to radiology and the medical profession by Dr. Robert D. Moreton. Past Moreton lecturers have included Sen. William Cohen, U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, and many pioneers and leaders in the radiology sciences.

ACR’s annual all-member meeting will be held May 15–19, 2016, in Washington, DC. The keynote address is being given by Ezekiel J. (Zeke) Emanuel, MD, PhD, an architect of the Affordable Care Act and a leading practitioner shaping the future of health care. Special events include Capitol Hill Day, with exclusive meetings scheduled for members to bring the “Voice of Radiology” to elected officials; the Body MRI Boot Camp and the Economics Forum. Sessions are organized in nine Knowledge Pathways, with more than 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) programming. The five-day meeting offers special sessions for residents, fellows and early-career physicians. More information can be found in the ACR 2016 program schedule. Online registration is open.
