Adolescents with HIV are able to withstand the ravages of the disease on the immune system much better than adults or younger children with the virus, according to a study led by Craig Wilson, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at UAB.

Details of the study were published in the April 2000 issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

"Findings suggest that physicians should be even more aggressively treating adolescents with HIV because they stand to do better on therapy than adults."

The study was conducted as part of a larger, multi-center national study coordinated by UAB to develop interventions and prevention programs tailored to adolescents.
