Newswise — Washington, DC (September 10, 2014) — The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research are pleased to announce that Jane Schell, MD, an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is the inaugural recipient of the William and Sandra Bennett Clinical Scholars program. Established by William M. Bennett, MD, FASN, and his wife Sandra, the program will advance the future of nephrology through education. Dr. Schell was selected as the inaugural Bennett Scholar for her project to develop an innovative curriculum to improve nephrology trainee’s knowledge and skills in discussing advance-care planning and end-of-life issues. She will receive $50,000 annually for 2 years to develop and implement a program for nephrology educators to teach fellows palliative care communication skills.

“ASN is honored to partner with Dr. Bennett on this vital program to mentor inspirational educators who have superb clinical skills as well as cultivate new educational tools for nephrology,” said ASN President Sharon M. Moe, MD, FASN. “Dr. Schell’s inaugural project is a timely example of how ASN and nephrology educators are working to ensure a strong, representative future workforce to meet the needs of a growing population with kidney disease.”

“I’m delighted with the selection of the first recipient,” said Dr. Bennett. “Nephrology needs more physicians who can teach, take care of patients, translate the rapidly evolving science into the clinical arena, and inspire their students, residents, and fellows to further themselves regardless where they practice. This program will fill the void between the bench and bedside, and provide role models for nephrology’s next generation.”

A former ASN President and founding Editor-in-Chief of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Dr. Bennett is a world-renowned expert in cystic kidney diseases and a Master of the American College of Physicians.

Applications for the next round of the William and Sandra Bennett Clinical Scholars Program will be accepted starting October 20, 2014. Information on ASN funding to support kidney research is available at http://www.asn-online.org/grants/.

Founded in 1966, and with nearly 15,000 members, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) leads the fight against kidney disease by educating health professionals, sharing new knowledge, advancing research, and advocating the highest quality care for patients.
