Attacking Plantar Warts

Those painful foot growths known as plantar warts may yield to a topical therapy now in clinical trials only at UAB. Dermatologist Craig Elmets, M.D., is testing Aldara cream, already approved for similar viral conditions.

Plantar warts, one of the most common dermatological problems, are traditionally difficult to treat. "Doctors freeze them out or surgically remove them, but they eventually return. The warts would go away in 3-5 years if left alone, but most people can't tolerate their pain since they grow deep into the foot."

Plantar warts are usually whitish, smooth and are from pinpoint to half-dollar size. Study subjects apply Aldara cream in combination with salicylic acid, a common over-the-counter foot wart medication.
