Biologists Return to Antarctica

UAB biologists Jim McClintock, Ph.D., Charles Amsler, Ph.D., and their team of researchers have spent several years diving beneath the ice in the waters off Antarctica studying marine invertebrates' chemical defenses against predators. The team's findings could ultimately help researchers understand and fight a number of human diseases.

"Studying metabolites in both plants and animals has applications in cancer-fighting research, AIDS screenings and other areas," McClintock says. "We're very excited, not just about our own projects, but also about those we're making possible for other people in a wide range of disciplines." McClintock, Amsler and their team are headed back to Antarctica in October 2001 to continue their research. Their trip will be chronicled on the UAB Media Relations Web site, www.uab.edu/news.
