Calming Children's Nightmares

During a national crisis, children may have nightmares or have trouble getting to sleep. "This is a natural reaction even for older children," says UAB counseling expert Patricia Sheets, Ph.D. "It's normal, but if these symptoms continue for more than three or four weeks, parents should consider seeking professional help. If your child is having trouble sleeping, ask them 'What will it take to make you feel better?' That gives children a sense of control. If they ask to sleep with mom and dad for a while, let them. Children have a need to be real close to their families. They may ask for something as simple as a glass of warm milk at bedtime." Playing soft music can also help children sleep.
