Newswise — The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) will present Cathie Guzzetta, PhD, RN, FAAN, with its AACN Pioneering Spirit Award.
This AACN Visionary Leadership Award recognizes significant contributions that influence high acuity and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values. The presentation will occur during the 2016 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition, New Orleans, May 16-19.
Guzzetta is a nursing mentor, consultant and award-winning researcher focused on the importance of holistic care. She has served on the clinical faculty at George Washington University School of Nursing, Washington, since 2007.
“Already widely respected as a master educator in critical care nursing of adults, a pioneer in introducing a holistic perspective to critical care and an award-winning author, Cathie further distinguished herself as the consummate mentor of pediatric patient care research by nurses at the bedside,” said AACN chief clinical officer Connie Barden, RN, MSN, CCRN-E, CCNS.
She spent 10 years on the faculty of The Catholic University of America in Washington, chairing the cardiovascular program at its school of nursing.
Guzzetta founded her consulting firm in 1989, initially focusing on holistic nursing and eventually expanding to the broader realm of clinical research. She served as a nursing research consultant with Parkland Memorial Hospital (Dallas) and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, and later with Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center.
Her research related to family presence during invasive procedures and CPR for children and adults contributed to a groundswell of change toward more patient- and family-centered care.
As the author of dozens of publications, she demonstrated consistent evidence about the many benefits for family members, leading AACN and other organizations to develop resources and initiatives supporting the practice.
Since the late 1990s, she has been principal investigator, co-investigator and mentor for numerous studies to benefit the care of critically ill children and adults. The wide range of research topics — including fasting times before procedures, use of virtual-reality glasses during lumbar puncture of adolescents with cancer, and facilitators and hindrances to hospital nursing research — reflects care challenges at the bedside.
AACN previously honored Guzzetta with its Distinguished Research Lecturer award in 2004. The American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau and other organizations have also recognized her contributions to the science of nursing.
She served as editor-in-chief of Capsules & Comments in Critical Care Nursing from 1991 to 1995.
The American Journal of Nursing honored her book, “Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice,” 3rd edition, with its 2000 Book of the Year Award (advanced practice nursing category). She is also the author of “Critical Care Nursing: Body-Mind-Spirit” and “AACN Handbook of Critical Care Nursing,” in addition to numerous manuscripts, book chapters and other publications.
Guzzetta earned bachelor and master’s degrees from Marquette University, Milwaukee, and a doctorate from Texas Woman’s University, Denton. She is an Edge Runner and fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
