Choosing the Right Birth Control

With so many options in birth control available, it can be confusing choosing the right one. There are once-a-month shots, once-every-three-month shots, progesterone-secreting IUDs and numerous choices in oral contraceptives available in varying combinations of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. UAB women's health nurse practitioner Penelope Morrison Bosarge, MSN, CRNP, suggests women interested in birth control discuss all the options with their health care providers. "Women should consider lifestyle factors, age, risk factors, other medication interactions and how successful women are with a medication's regimen." When a choice has been made, it is recommended women allow three months for the medication to regulate, unless side effects are unbearable.
