Ever wonder why hunters make such dramatic fashion statements with the color orange?

Michael Loop, Ph.D., associate professor of physiological optics, says orange is an excellent color choice on many fronts. When it comes to deer, the myth that they can't see orange isn't true. Instead, deer are like colorblind humans, Loop said, and therefore can't distinguish as many colors as humans. So if a hunter is in a tree surrounded by branches and leaves, the deer cannot distinguish the orange vest from the green leaves and brown twigs. But if a hunter stood against a blue or white background, such as the sky, the deer would indeed be able to see orange.
