Cooler Weather and Asthma

The cooler temperatures of fall can bode ill for asthma sufferers. Cooler weather and dry air can trigger asthma attacks, says UAB immunologist James Bonner, M.D., especially during outdoor exercise. An additional irritant can occur when your home's heating system is turned on for the first time. "Using the heating system for the first time can stir up dust mites and prompt allergic reactions that exacerbate asthma." Viral infections such as influenza are particularly hard on asthmatics. A bad bout with the flu can be a serious setback, so Bonner recommends that asthma patients consider getting a flu shot.
