Baby boomers know that the population is aging. But as more begin to care for elderly parents, they begin to realize the implication of that statistic.

"Some of the biggest hurdles people face when trying to care for an elderly parent are learning how to navigate the complicated health care system and how to take advantage of all the resources offered to the elderly within their community," says Kathleen Fix, M.D., medical director of the new UAB Geriatric Health Center. "Many seniors deal with multiple chronic conditions that are best managed by a geriatrician who knows how to coordinate care in one place."

Also, she said specialty clinics often have resources available to point caretakers in the right direction when it comes to taking advantage of the community resources available.
