"Death and dying have largely been taboo subjects in this country," says John L. Shuster, M.D., director of UAB's palliative medicine program. "We are only beginning to discuss end-of-life issues and search out means to make our final days more significant."
Focusing that search is a UAB sponsored program, Alabamians for Better Care at Life's End (ABLCE). ABCLE is a statewide coalition of health care professionals, educators and policymakers to identify problems, make recommendations and build public support for ways to improve care of the dying -- particularly among underserved populations.
ABCLE is participating in a national videoconference on end-of-life issues on May 14.
