Dementia Patients Prone To Wander

About 36 percent of patients with dementia are prone to wander away from home and become lost, says UAB gerontologist Andrew Duxbury, M.D.

"As parents, we learn that when young children are too quiet, watch out. It's the same for caregivers of Alzheimer's patients." Those in the early-to-mid stages of dementia are especially likely to, while patients in later stages are less capable of organizing the effort needed to leave the house. "Try to find the cause," he suggests. "Does the patient believe they still have a job to go to, or are they simply bored and need greater stimulation at home?"
