Many students finish four years of medical school without ever being exposed to one of the most important fields of study for disease prevention -- nutrition. "Most people consider their physician as the best source for information on their overall health, yet physicians are often not well informed themselves about the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of disease," says UAB nutrition expert Doug Heimburger, M.D. At UAB, first year medical students must take a clinical nutrition course, and Heimburger is pushing for all medical schools to make nutrition education a key component in their curriculum.
