Special journal issue is first major compilation of scientific studies on health and exposure issues faced by veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq

Newswise — The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), an international medical society, honored Ronald F. Teichman, MD, MPH, FACOEM, with the Kammer Merit in Authorship Award. The award – presented April 28 during its 2013 American Occupational Health Conference in Orlando – recognizes the most outstanding contribution published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM) during a given year.

Dr. Teichman, President/Owner of Teichman Occupational Health Associates, Inc., West Orange, N.J., received the 2013 Kammer Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution as Guest Editor of a special JOEM issue on “Health Effects of Deployment to Afghanistan and Iraq.”

The June 2012 issue, featuring 16 articles that focused on the wide range of hazards and concerns of returning veterans, was the first major compilation of scientific studies devoted to health and exposure issues faced by veterans returning from the most current conflicts. He also served as Associate Director for Clinical Services, Education, and Risk Communication for the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center at the VA Medical Center, East Orange, N.J.

Dr. Teichman received his MD from New York Medical College and his MPH from Columbia University School of Public Health. He is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Teichman is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the JOEM Editorial Board. He is member of ACOEM’s New Jersey component and past president of the College’s Maryland and Carolinas components and served as Vice President of the New York and New York Upstate components.

About the Kammer Merit in Authorship Award — This award was created in 1948 to recognize the author(s) of an article or publication of outstanding significance in occupational medicine. Renamed in 1960 for Adolph G. Kammer, MD (1903-1962), a past president (1951-1952) and first editor of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM), the criteria was changed to recognize the author(s) of the most outstanding contribution to JOEM during a given year.
