Newswise — Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a leader in the field of radiology, will present a State-of-the-Art Lecture entitled "Kidney Disease Research within the NIH Roadmap: Strategies for the Future" during the American Society of Nephrology's 39th Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in San Diego, California.
Dr. Zerhouni has been actively involved in the establishment of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, a new research vision to accelerate medical discovery to improve health, focus the attention of the biomedical research community on new pathways of discovery, research teams for the future, and re-engineer the clinical research enterprise. The Roadmap aims to increase the pace of discovery and speed the application of new knowledge to the development of new prevention strategies, new diagnostics and new treatments, and to transfer these innovations to health care providers and the public.
In addition to working to establish the Roadmap, Dr. Zerhouni aided in development of the Strategic Plan for NIH Obesity Research, a multi-dimensional research agenda, to address the obesity epidemic. Created to enhance the development of new research in areas of greatest scientific opportunity and coordinate obesity research throughout the NIH, the Strategic Plan calls for researchers to bridge the study of behavioral and environmental causes of obesity with the study of genetic and biologic causes.
Dr. Zerhouni will present his State-of-the-Art-Lecture on Friday, November 17 at 9:45 am in Hall D of the San Diego Convention Center.
