Newswise — Between 1975 and 2002 more than 166,000 pedestrians were killed in vehicle crashes, according to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis. In a paper recently judged Best Sponsored Technical Paper by the Southern District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Virginia Sisiopiku, Ph.D., associate professor of civil engineering at UAB, outlined advanced technology options for enhancing pedestrian safety. "While pedestrians benefit from educational programs, engineering interventions also play a significant role in keeping pedestrians safe. Preliminary research shows there is great potential for pedestrian safety improvements using information technology-based applications, including pedestrian detection systems along curbs or in crosswalks and flashing lights embedded in pavement in uncontrolled crosswalks."
