Newswise — According to the USDA, the new law covers muscle cuts and ground beef, lamb, chicken, goat and pork; wild and farm-raised fish and shellfish; perishable agricultural commodities (specifically fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables); macadamia nuts; pecans; ginseng and peanuts.

Childs says the law stems from a consumer demand to know where their food is coming from. "The consumer's major interest in country of origin sourcing of their foods gravitates to two extremes," she says. "A growing concern among consumers is knowing whether or not their food is sourced from China or if it is sourced locally."

Ironically, Childs explains, the current labeling does not apply to processed food, therefore cannot help the consumer identify products containing ingredients sourced out of the country - a primary concern.

More information about the specific requirements the regulation are available from the USDA Web site.
