Dr. Jay Banner, Director, Environmental Science Institute
Banner's research interests include the application of field, petrologic, chemical and isotopic methods to studying the chemical evolution of groundwater and ancient oceans, and the control of changing climate on these processes.
Dr. John Holt, Research Associate, Institute for Geophysics
Holt is using airborne gravity and magnetics in conjunction with subglacial topography from radar sounding to delineate crustal boundaries and characterize active tectonics in the Amundsen Sea Embayment of West Antarctica.
Dr. Charles Jackson, Research Scientist, Institute for Geophysics
Jackson is interested in the interpretation of modern and paleoclimate observational data in terms of the physics of the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, and their coupling. His primary research tools are complex computer models of the climate system and various simplified models that are sometimes more useful for isolating processes of interest.
Dr. Byron Tapley, Professor of Aerospace Engineering
Tapley's recent research has focused on the use of satellite observations of the earth to understand long-term global climate change. He is also serving as the principal investigator for the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) Mission. GRACE will provide highly accurate measurements of the time varying changes in the Earth's gravity field caused by mass exchange between the Earth's atmosphere, ocean and land surfaces. New insight into such diverse phenomena as continental water storage and ocean bottom currents will be gained.
