Eye Exams Spot Signs of Disease

It's said that the eyes are the window to the soul, but what about to the body?

"Eye care professionals often discover early warning signs of disease during eye examinations," says Leo Semes, O.D., associate professor of optometry at UAB's School of Optometry. Semes said optometrists may see symptoms for everything from diabetes and high blood pressure to less common diseases like sickle cell disease. Blurred vision or double vision are potential signs of both diabetes and high blood pressure. "Ten percent of diabetics suffer from diabetic eye disease, the main cause of vision loss in the working population."
