Fluids Essential in Cold Weather

It's February. You're outside, playing or working hard. It's cold and you're not sweating, so you're not drinking fluids. You don't need them, right? "Wrong," says UAB registered dietitian Kathy Hubbert, director of UAB's Eat Right program.

"Fluid needs do not diminish just because the weather is cold. You may not sweat as much, but your lungs require more moisture due to the drier air both indoors and out. And your skin does not hold moisture as well in cold weather."

Hubbert says warm or room-temperature liquids do help keep your body warm when your are outdoors.
