You don't have to be a diva for a voice problem to threaten your career.

A special clinic at UAB takes care of "professional voices," whether they belong to performing artists or those with more ordinary livelihoods such as radio dispatchers and salespeople. The facility unites physicians, speech pathologists and acoustic researchers with a voice instructor to diagnose and treat vocal problems.

"One person's problem may be medical, such as or gastroesophageal reflux or a polyp on the vocal cords. Another's may be the result of faulty technique," says otolaryngologist William Carroll, M.D.

Diagnostic equipment includes a video scope that records a magnified, real-time image of a patient's vocal cords as they move.
