UAB's highly successful weight management program, EatRight, is 25 years old. Then an Air Force flight surgeon, UAB professor of nutrition science Roland Weinsier, M. D., created the plan after the wife of a sergeant asked for diet help.

"We created a plan that emphasized large amounts of foods that were low in calories," remembers Weinsier, "so that she could feel full, but limit calorie intake."

Later at UAB, Weinsier's research was first to show that amount of food, not calories or fat content, determines when we feel full and stop eating. "Very few weight programs stand the test of time. With obesity endemic in America now, EatRight has become a model for successful weight loss."
