Helping Chronically Ill Children Cope

The impact chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes can have on a child's quality of life are examined in a new book, "Quality of Life in Child and Adolescent Illness: Concepts, Methods and Findings" (2001), co-edited by UAB psychologist Jan Wallander, Ph.D. "We can easily get lost and just treat the disease, but we should also look at how it effects the patient's daily life. A chronically ill child's quality of life involves their self-esteem, how they interact socially, and how they manage the physical demands of daily life." How children deal with an illness depends on the disease and their family and peer support. "We hope that more health care experts will come to use quality of life as the ultimate outcome of treatments and healthcare policy."
